Steven Shirey is a member of DTM’s five-person Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry Group who works almost exclusively on terrestrial problems. With students and postdocs, his research uses the trace element and isotopic compositions of natural terrestrial minerals and rocks to understand the geodynamic and magmatic processes that have shaped the Earth. The main emphasis has been on the formation of the continents, the only chemical differentiation process to span nearly all of Earth history and to record changes in these processes. A recurring theme has been to show how ancient episodes of magmatism and crust formation are operating significantly differently from those operating today.
